The conservation program at Serre de la Madone is deeply rooted in Johnston\u2019s legacy as a plant hunter and collector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The garden is designed as a living herbarium where each plant was deliberately chosen, placed, and cultivated to thrive in specific microclimates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, that legacy lives on in the careful curation of plantings and the preservation of historically significant specimens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These three plant collections are officially certified by the CCVS (Specialized Plant Collection Conservatory), a national organization whose mission is to preserve the richness and diversity of France’s national plant assets. The careful maintenance of these collection demonstrate Serre de la Madone\u2019s commitment to conservation, education and research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These collections are not static: new acquisitions are introduced through exchanges with botanical gardens and specialist nurseries, while aging specimens are monitored and replaced with propagation from original genetic lines when possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The garden also shelters rare species from other families: Mahonia lomariifolia<\/em>, Acacia pravissima<\/em>, Chasmanthe floribunda<\/em>, Stenocarpus sinuatus<\/em>, Cussonia paniculata<\/em>, and many more. Many of these were first introduced to cultivation in Europe thanks to Johnston\u2019s efforts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
